Exuma is one of the most beautiful places on the Earth, but it’s also home to an eerie plane wreck steeped in a dark history. Just off the shore of Staniel Cay, you can visit the world’s most accessible underwater plane! Here is what you should know before visiting it!

It’s Located in Staniel Cay

The plane wreck is located right off the coast of Staniel Cay, which is located near the center of the Exuma Cays and is actually one of the largest in the chain. Staniel Cay actually falls within the boundary of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, and is also home to Thunderball Grotto and located near the famous Pig Beach.

It’s a Drug Plane

Exuma’s underwater plane wreck has a shady past. Exuma might be known as a laid-back beach community, but its history is rooted in piracy and drug smuggling. The plane was actually used as part of the Medellin Cartel in the 1970a, which used Exuma’s Norman’s Cay as a refueling point between Colombia and Florida, to smuggle drugs and money.

It’s Easy to See and Reach

You can easily spot the sunken plane wreck thanks to Exuma’s crystal, clear turquoise waters. Not only can you see every detail, but you can also easily reach the plane as well! It’s located just off the coast and is only a few feet below the water, making it accessible to even the most beginner snorkelers and divers.

It’s Beautiful and Once in a Lifetime Sight

This plane wreck has been reclaimed by nature over the years and is now home to a myriad of marine creatures that have claimed it as part of the ecosystem. As you explore it, you’ll find colorful coral and schools of exotic fish. You may even see a turtle or odd shark pass by! You probably won’t get a chance to explore a wreck like this, this close, again in your life!
